Abstract: THE ROLE OF ACCOUNTING FOR HEDGE FUNDS AND ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS
This study aims to: (1) assess the unique accounting challenges associated with hedge funds and alternative investments; (2) evaluate the impact of specialized accounting practices on the performance of these investment vehicles; and (3) determine the role of accounting in mitigating risks associated with alternative investments. A survey research design was employed to gather comprehensive data from industry professionals. Based on Taro Yamane's formula, a sample size of 280 accountants and investment managers from Lagos, Nigeria, was selected to ensure a statistically valid sample. The study includes a case study of a major hedge fund operating in Lagos to provide practical insights. The reliability coefficient score of 0.86 indicates high reliability of the survey tool. Findings reveal that specialized accounting practices are essential for accurate valuation, risk management, and regulatory compliance in hedge funds and alternative investments. The study recommends enhancing the accounting education curriculum to include specialized courses on alternative investments, adopting advanced accounting technologies, and fostering collaboration between accounting professionals and fund managers to improve financial oversight.
